Cooperation of the Republic of Belarus with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia

The diplomatic relations between the Republic of Belarus and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia were established on May 1994.

The Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in Ethiopia was opened in 2013.

The ceremony of credentials presentation by the Ambassador of the Republic of Belarus Dmitry Kuptel to the President of Ethiopia Mulatu Teshome took place on August 20, 2014.

The legal base of cooperation between the Republic of Belarus and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is in the formation stage.

The following bilateral legal documents were signed: Protocol on Cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Belarus and Ethiopia (November 2012); Memorandum on cooperation between the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Chamber of Commerce of Ethiopia (October 2014); Memorandum of Understanding between the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus and the National Bank of Ethiopia (December 2015).

Under consideration are the following bilateral legal documents: Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Belarus and the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on the promotion and reciprocal protection of investments; Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Education between the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus and the Ministry of Education of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia; Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Belarus and the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on military and technical cooperation; Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Belarus and the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income and on property (capital); Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Belarus and the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on Mutual Visa Exemption for Holders of Diplomatic and Official (Service) Passports.

The trade relations of the Republic of Belarus with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia have the following dynamics:

Currently the main commodity items in the structure of Belarusian exports to Ethiopia are tires, fertilizers, trucks, instruments and equipment for measuring and monitoring liquids and gases characteristics. The basis of imports is the supply of flowers, dried beans and coffee.

Visits at the highest level were not carried out. Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Belarus Valentin Rybakov visited Ethiopia on October 13 to 15, 2014, during which the first round of inter-ministerial consultations was held, as well as a business forum on the basis of the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce.

Belarusian delegations headed by the management of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus to Ethiopia visited Ethiopia several times in the period from 2015 to 2017.
